Spring Training: Braves fall to Yankees, 3-2 (2015)

The Atlanta Braves traveled over to Tampa and suffered a 3-2 loss to the New York Yankees on Thursday night. Masahiro Tanaka made his Graprefruit league debut with two perfect innings and a pair of strikeouts. The right-hander chose to rehab his partially torn UCL rather than opting for Tommy John surgery.

At the plate: Runs were hard to come by, but Atlanta welcomed back Andrelton Simmons. He made his Grapefruit League debut after having it delayed due to a strained oblique. Simmons finished 1-for-3 with a single. Todd Cunningham got the Braves on the board with a game-tying, RBI-single in the top of the fifth inning. They’d take a 2-1 lead an inning later on Alberto Callaspo’s sacrifice fly. That came against former Atlanta reliever David Carpenter, who was traded to New York over the winter. As for the rest of the lineup, Freddie Freeman and Chris Johnson each went 0-for-3 with a pair of strikeouts. Christian Bethancourt had a double in two trips and is now batting .294 this spring.

On the mound: Shelby Miller’s second start of the spring was much smoother than the first. He allowed just one run on two hits and a walk while striking out two over three innings.  Josh Outman and Michael Kohn followed Miller with scoreless frames. New York got to Tyrell Jenkins (0-1) for a two-spot in the seventh to take the lead for good. Sugar Ray Marimon struck out the side in the bottom the eighth.

Of note: Fredi Gonzalez was ejected in the bottom of the first inning for arguing balls and strikes. Home plate umpire Dan Iassogna ran Gonzalez from the game after the first pitch from Miller was called a ball, though much of the Braves manager’s frustration may have revolved around the called third strike on Freeman that ended the top of the first… The Braves have their second of three split squad days on Friday… Atlanta will send Manny Banuelos to the mound for his first start of the spring. The former Yankee farmhand will face the Mets in Port St. Lucie, while Mike Foltynewicz makes his second start of the spring. It comes at Champion Stadium against the Tigers.
